I'm making some progress with connecting the dialogue server for the crpg example, but no strong results. Goal is to have a server that integrates the existing features of the Louder engine with Godot's multiplayer.

Major criticisms of the way things are handled currently:

  • Events are deconstructed, sent over the network, then reconstructed partially. Would be nice if the type exported to Godot was simply serializable in some way.
  • There are lots of steps to interacting with the engine. Design needs to be re-evaluated to allow for looser usage. I should talk to some people not involved with this project and get their opinions on pain points.

  • The usage of the engine is spread across the example's local codebase and should be centralized. For example, player_speaker is sent as a string to the server but received as the integer id.

Fully task list

  • Functional multiplayer dialogue layer and UI
    • Functional multiplayer layer
    • Functional UI (#82)
  • Multiplayer lobby with character colors, position syncing (#81)
  • Recognizable map layout
  • RPG mechanics of skills, inventory, dice checks and money connected to the dialogue
    • RPG systems work on their own
    • Double check dialogue callbacks and asks are implemented properly.
    • RPG systems integrated with dialogue
  • Decent array of content to make the demo playable. (#83, #84)

Not all of these have been noticed as their own issues. Some were split into multiple issues. Start from the top. Addressing the criticism about split events is probably possible and worthwhile while you keep working on conversations on the side.
